Figs, Apples, Apricots and Plums

Figs are in season and on sale (at Harris Teeter)… I actually have never eaten one before but we are making them in Food Service Lab next week so I thought I would try one

I didn’t like it all that much to be honest. The novelty to it was what threw my taste buds, I wasn’t sure if I could eat the outer peel or the inner seeds… Any help ?

In class snack: Apricot Fruit Leather from Trader Joes…

Hello, my name is Laural and I am newly addicted to fruit leathers.

At the meeting yesterday evening, they had an assortment of “refreshments”. This is one of those tiny side plates but it looks huge in the photo. Anyhow, I had half a pita with a dab of chicken salad, a few veggies with dab of hummus.

Dinner after the meeting was a blob of Fage 0% to moisten up the leftover, dry Falafel balls, rice and beans with cheese, a big cup of veggies, and a pluot plum ( well Harris Teeter had a sign at the bin saying Pluot Plums, but I think I grabbed just a black plum that was in the bin.

Body:
Not sure if I will be up for a workout after class, but I think I might do a run. I’m attempting to be flexible :)

I am taking 2 new supplements that I thought I would share- One is Celadrin, which is a fatty acid supplement claiming to help with joint inflammation.  I found it while looking for shellfish-free Glucosamine- which was near impossible in the store. I was going to order online but found a Vegan Glucosamine at Whole Foods, so I am now taking that as well!

Being allergic to shellfish and having joint problems probably go hand in hand because Glucosamine is derived from Shellfish and helpful in cartiledge strength and formation. Thus, I have never had enough glucosamine intake from my diet to help with joints.

If any of you are taking either, I would love to hear feedback!

Mind:
In Class all day!

Exam went really well and had a chance to get some extra reading done for class today. We are discussing the 1970’s Food and Soceity, in regards to the role- model for major Food companies: Nestle.

So far this has been my favorite class of the semester!

Soul:

I think I would like to start a weight management camp for obese children. In my childhood, I never attended summer camps but always thought they would have been fun. After spending three years teaching children with behavioral and developmental issues, I do really enjoy teaching children but I love my nutrition studies. We’ll see where life takes me!

It’s almost the “weekend” for me despite that I have to work all weekend and have tons of reading to do!

Anyone have great weekend plans? My future mother-in-law’s birthday is this sunday, let there be cake!

  1. Yummmm…I LOVE figs! Eat the whole thing (except the stem) and the older, wrinklier and juicier the fig is the better.

  2. chicken salad and felafel are two of my favourite foods :) I’ve never had figs but am pretty sure you can eat the whole thing- from what I’ve seen of figs, yours looks a little underripe? Give it another go…pick one with dark skin maybe?

    Enjoy the party!

  3. I’ve only tried figs once, and I didn’t like them either! I’m convinced I just had a bad one though, because everyone in the food blog world seems to be crazy about them!

I love the idea of starting a weight management camp for obese children. It’s a beautiful thought!

Hi! I’m so excited to post a comment because I also live in Raleigh! I discovered your blog through Carrots ‘n’ Cake. About the figs – they are my favorite fruit. I love them. But I grew up eating them straight from the source, and they’re something that really must ripen on the plant, to the point where they’re nearly all purple and splitting. I think your HT one must be underripe. That’s too bad, because they can be truly spectacular.

(You do eat the exterior, btw. Up to the point where it feels too tough. You’ll know.)

  5. o how i love me some TJ’s fruit leathers! :) have you ever had a fiberful!? OMG amazing! try them next time your at TJ’s you will not be disappointed

  6. I’ve never had a fresh fig before either…all I know is that the dried ones are dang tasty!

  7. I’ve never had a fig – only Fig Newman’s ;)

That dinner looks really good! Glad your exam went well! I think your camp idea is great!!

  8. I’m definitely a fan of figs, but you have to get a nice, ripe and juicy one. Some of them taste like dirt? Or I like to make them into a compote or put them on pizza with prosciutto and goat cheese and dress em up. Glad your exam went well :) I think I’m with you this weekend, I’m going to lock myself in the library to do a lot of research and figure out a thesis topic :)

  9. I really like dried figs. I don’t think I’ve ever had a fresh one! Lately I’ve been obsessed with eating dried figs dipped in almond butter. So good.

  10. I LOVE figs! I can’t believe you didn’t like them. I guess maybe they just were dupes? But if you don’t want them, what you can do is ship them over to me :-)

Or really, try grilling them and sprinkle with blue cheese. Or stuff them with brie in a panini.

  11. Wow, starting a weight management camp would be awesome. You would do such a good job with that because I know you would be good at making it fun and interesting for the kids. Please keep updated!

  12. I never knew that about about glucosamine and shellfish allergies! I have a shellfish allergy, too, and have had various joint problems in my life.

It also explains why my cat loves his glucosamine and chondroitin supplement for his bad hip so much!

  13. Thanks for all the Fig info everyone!! We are making them this week in Lab with goat cheese and nuts I believe, so that should be tasty!

Hi Ashley! That is so cool you live here too! My fiance went to NSCU- Go Red White!I waited for my other one to ripen up more and liked it much better!
