Bakery Breakfast

I slathered on some natural peanut butter to this slice of Cinnamon Raisin Bread from the French Meadow Bakery for breakfast this morning. It was DELICIOUS! ( I also had an unphotographed organic fuji apple and coffee )

FMB Cinnamon Raisin Bread Likes:

Taste & Flavor: The sweet raisins with slight cinnamon flavor and buttery crust was delightful. It smelled fantastic warming up in the toaster too and made a great combo with the peanut butter!

Texture: French Meadow is doing something right when it comes to GF bread! If you have never tasted GF bread, it often comes out with quite odd textures.  Because you remove the wheat  for GF bread, it alters the baking properties. In Principles of Food Class, I learned that when you remove the protein in the flour, the result is a more crumby, dry texture. Since gluten is the protein in wheat, I was surprised to find this gluten free bread softer and less dry than most other GF breads I have tried!

“On the Fence About”:

Nutrition Content! I shouldn’t even say that this is a dislike because when you start eating gluten free, you realize how hard it is to get in calories from grain sources! Each slice contains a whopping 150 calories, 5 g fat, 22g carbohydrates and only 2 g fiber & 2 g protein. Since you remove the wheat, you must remove the fiber and protein as well, which can be less filling.

150 is not a whole lot of calories, however, it could be if you think about it in the sense of a “meal”. If you made a sandwich, added a protein, fruit or vegetables, and possibly milk or another beverage to round out a meal, that can add up quickly on top of the 300 calories from the bread!

In general, I really enjoyed this bread and am looking forward to reviewing the soft multi-grain flavor that FMB sent me as well!!! If you would like to order one of the fantastic products French Meadow Bakery offers ( they do plenty of gluten containing products in addition to gluten-free), you can check out their website and order by clicking French Meadow. Thank you FMB!

I think that’s a really good point about gluten free products. Often people think it’s healthier or “diet,” but that’s far from the case and I never thought about how it’s because something has to go back in when the fiber is removed! I guess it’s kind of the same as low fat – something has to go back in to replace the fat. Interesting.
