Work Travels: Murphy to Manteo

by bhealthy on April 4, 2011

The town of Murphy, NC was founded in 1835 when the first post office was opened under the name of Huntington, the Col. Hunter was the First Postmaster.  Huntington later became Murphy, named after Archibald D. Murphey,

Archibald D. Murphey

Later in 1839, Cherokee County was formed from a portion of neighboring Macon County. Prior to 1839, Cherokee County and the surrounding area was home to the Cherokee Indian Nation. In 1839, the Cherokee were removed forced upon the infamous “Trail of Tears”.

The “Trail of Tears” followed a pathway out of town that is now Lakeside Drive.

In 1851, Murphy was incorporated as the county seat of Cherokee County.

My last trip of the week was to Murphy NC, where the Agent had so graciously called in a favor at her Wellness Center for free guest passes! Last week was so long and we had a long drive ahead of us on Friday, so keeping up with exercise and eating healthy was very helpful!

I was able to get in resistance training at the Hiwassee Wellness center and a jog around the Konehete Park. We had lunch with several of the Agents’ from the county office at Brother’s (you’ll have to try it though it was too dark for my photo) before getting on the road for a 7 hr + drive back home! The drive was incredibly scenic and filled with those grass fed cows I mentioned in the last post! Ready for more mountain photos?

Heading into what the Ag Agent in Cherokee called “The Gorge”, which is really the Nantahala Gorge. He also told us that the “Tail of the Dragon” (a big motorcycle race/event) winds and twists through this gorge.

Back through the Nantahala Forest…I really must come back and go white water rafting here!

Now that is a gorgeous gorge, Get it, Gorge…ous

Thankfully, I had my (super awesome) coworker to snap this photo of me, share the mileage ….

(Me!)

and we split this too- River’s End Molten Chocolate Cake

The raspberry sauce really made the dish, the cake was incredibly moist, and well vanilla ice cream is a classic. Throughout this entire trip, I had wanted to find this Mt. Dew Supernova since our first stop on Tuesday because I kept seeing commercials for it. Though I’m not the “commercial” type, I did want to try it because I like to try new things. I finally found it somewhere along I 40! To be truthful, it really wasn’t that great but I’m glad I found it so I didn’t have to wonder anymore!

I started my work travels this year with Manteo and have now gone all the way to Murphy.  Did you know that “Murphy to Manteo” is kind of a “big deal” in NC ?
http://teamfox.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/w41494_s273558944_56465.jpgThis past September, 3 women set out to run this 545 miles to raise money for Parkinson’s Disease research.Maybe I will get to run it with them sometime ?! It was a great trip but I couldn’t have been more excited to be home for the weekend! The weekend has already flown by. Guess who is heading out of town (again) towards Manteo this afternoon!?

(Yep, Me Again!)

It seems like it is never ending. I did get in a 5 mile run today so now I just need to pack up and get on the road.

Have you ever been to Murphy? Have you ever been to Manteo?

I have to say, Manteo is probably one of my favorite places in NC because of the gorgeous waterfront, tons of cute restaurants and laid-back feel!

Any exciting plans for this week?
Today is my brother-in-law’s birthday ( HAPPY BIRTHDAY GREG!) and my friend Timmy’s birthday ( HAPPY BIRTHDAY TIM!)
