Sticking with it!

Does anyone else find the weekend goes by in a FLASH?

It seems before I know it…

I am back to the “8-5 Monday- Friday Me” and all of these things that I wanted to do are either semi started, semi finished, or accomplished and forgotten about! Let’s see, allow me to catch you up as best I can to get back into my regular posting schedule (Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday).

Friday morning I posted about Calorie Camera’s for School Nutrition… I loved everyone’s thoughts about it and will definitely keep you posted on news from it!

We had this huge proposal due yesterday (Tuesday) for our entire program funding. Because of that, I could not take off work Monday & Tuesday as I had hoped! I need a vacation!

I love the beach!

I’m looking forward to a vacation ASAP, especially now that it is almost Memorial Day!

I started hunkering down on training months ago for a race in May but unfortunately, my knees were not handling running on 3 days/week or more. I took a couple weeks to regroup, restart training and unfortunately, the weather is now too hot for races around here. My training recap:

Sunday - Long Run Day

  • May 8th-  7.75 miles, 1 hr 11 minutes
  • May 15th-  9 miles, 1 hr 22 minutes
  • May 22nd-Long day of golf, 4 hours

Mondays – Gym at Lunch

  • May 3rd, May 9th, May 16th, May 23rd
  • Strength Training (Chest, Shoulders Triceps, Hammies)
  • Elliptical

Tuesdays- Gym at Lunch

  • Spin/ Cycling Class
  • May 9th (1hr- 13 mi), May 16th (1 hr- 14 mi), May 23rd ( 50 min- 15 mi)

Wednesdays-  Gym at Lunch

  • May 4th, May 11th, May 18th, May 25th (Today!)
  • Strength Training (Back, Biceps, Quads, Abs) – I increased Reps last week!
  • Elliptical
  • Today I won’t get to work out because there is a work function for dinner and setup is all day!

Thursdays- Walk at Lunch

  • May 5th, May 12th, May 19th
  • It is amazing how nice even just a 30 -40 minute walk makes me feel!

Fridays & Saturdays-  Who Knows?!

Most Friday and Saturdays I consider “Active Rest” days which includes normal weekend things like shopping, friends, dancing, parties, housework, yardwork, house projects, etc.  I also have to give my body more rest time to recoupe strength, repair muscles, and prepare for long runs on Sundays.

This has been my training schedule for a few months but not quite as consistent as it has been so far in May. It has been the easiest to maintain with my schedule on a regular basis, which is key in keeping an active, healthy lifestyle!

If I find a race in the near future, it will be an easy schedule to adapt too. I will gradually bump up my Sunday runs to get to the desired length ( 13.1 miles, 26. 2 miles, etc. ?) and add in a short speed/tempo run on Thursday or Fridays. I will also add in a yoga session, usually Monday evenings, to make sure I’m stretched out and peacefully calm!

The one food I cannot get enough of, especially while I’m training, is Salmon!

Avacado too- I think my body craves the healthy oils/unsaturated fats. It is interesting because during training my muscles and joints are inflamed for all the exercise so it makes nutritional sense!

What are your thoughts on training plans? Ever stick to a training plan consistently and how did it work for you?

The training I have come up with was entirely based on what I have found works for me but I have stuck with it (save tweaking and improvements) since I started blogging in 2008! I’ve paired it with lots of cross training and concepts from other training plans like always doing your long run on sunday (typical race day).

Have you ever had to miss out on something like vacation because of work?

Let me have it, Vent it out !!

What are your favorite ways to get in exercise ?

Swimming is probably my favorite way to get exercise.  It is so much fun for me, I don’t even think of it as exercise.  I’m all about the avocados too lately :)   I think you are right about your body craving healthy fats.  Have a great day!

That workout is pretty freakin’ awesome! Plus, I will forgo chicken and bacon on my salad just so I can have avocado instead! Yum!

I am loving avocados lately too! I love any kind of plan, and actually enjoy developing my own training plans. I constantly tweak them as I go based on how I feel, and think it really helps me listen to my body yet still push it when I need to.

Dancing is considered ‘active rest’? I haven’t taken vacation in ages. Sometimes I consider work travels as vacation because its fun, but maybe thats sad?

  • Nicolle Miller

Unfortunately, there are frequently times where I can’t travel where I want because I don’t have the vacation time, or it’s “busy season” at work.  I missed a few family trips in New York because our crazy time was June and July.  I’ve missed a few weddings (one at my old job, one at the new), lots of baptisms, birthdays, reunions, etc.  But, you forget about it all when you get to go on an amazing trip – like Australia and New Zealand!

I’m so sorry you had to miss your trip!  That is such a bummer.
I love to try to stick to training or workout plans. I feel more accomplished when I get through a workout I had scheduled.  I am also more likely to stick with them too.

looks like you’ve developed a good training plan. i think training for an event definitely helps to keep me accountable.
so sad you had to miss your vacation! i’m also on a regular boring schedule that doesn’t leave too much room for creativity or vacations. i sympathize with you!
