Working Out Wednesday

by bhealthy on June 15, 2011

Being a nutrition professional is tough because most of the time physical activity and nutrition go hand in hand. The lines get blurred often and sometimes one is substituted for the other. Many people think “I just need to workout more” or “I need to eat better” but I think it truly is a combination of both that help you in the quest to be healthier.

I find this dynamic difficult too because I love all areas of health. RD’s are experts in Nutrition and Personal Trainers are experts in Physical Activity/Fitness. Its common for personal trainers to take on nutrition/diet issues when they may or may not have the appropriate education. Likewise, RD’s can become certified trainers but may have to address inactivity with clients wanting to obtain better health.

If you wanted to see only one person for both, Who would trust most?

I am really intrigued by these new trendy home workout programs- Insanity and p90x!  Both seem to have combined fitness with nutrition in an attempt to offer a “complete package” so to speak.  Insanity is a 60 day program and the nutrition guide offers recipes that seem to be pretty sound, clean, and healthy. I do know their nutrient analysis is off just from glancing at the Berry Smoothie recipe! Different milks have completely different nutrient profiles and it suggests several. However, almond milk and skim milk are different in every nutrient as are different protein powders and berries. Nonetheless, the idea of a berry smoothie isn’t a bad idea to recommend.

For the physical/fitness aspect, I don’t think sticking to a 60 day regime is necessarily a good concept. I mean, after 60 days, then what? Also, it isn’t always convenient in any 60 day period especially if you are already an avid exerciser. I think flexibility in your workout regime is necessary for a balanced life. Insanity seems like a great option for weight management and for beginner-mid experienced individuals that want to get a great workout without a gym.

Last week was all about moving, lifting, adjusting, unpacking, organizing etc. All of that can be exhausting so it left me out of the loop on exercise. I am happy that I have reached a balance in my life where it didn’t bother me one bit and I just jumped right back into my normal routine this week! Here is how my workouts this week have been shaping up (haha) this week:

Sunday: 1 mile warm up run and 45 minute Insanity DVD (Plyometric)
Monday:(Gym at Lunch) Back &Biceps for Strength, Elliptical for Cardio 45 min.
Tuesday: 3 mile run on campus after work, 26 minutes
Wednesday: (Gym at Lunch) Chest, Shoulders, Triceps for Strength, Elliptical for Cardio 45 min.
Thursday: 80 minute Insanity DVD
Friday/Saturday/Sunday: Some combination of Rest/Long Run (8 miles)/ Insanity DVD ?

I think I will make Working Out Wednesday’s a regular post each week!

What was your favorite workout this week (or recently) ?

I am excited to have added Insanity, though I won’t stick to the set 60 day schedule because I have too many other interests like yoga, the gym on lunch breaks, etc.

IDEALLY, I’d want to see someone certified in both areas. I think people have a tendency to listen mostly to trainers though because they’re most easily accessible (at the gym, etc). I think a lot of those programs are great because although they’re not cheap, they’re not as expensive as hiring a trainer. My favorite workout? hmm I took Attack last night and it was fabulous. I miss teaching it so much! But its definitely getting tough for me to rock it through Attack at 8 1/2 months preggers (even doing a lot of the moves at low impact)

I have been loving my morning workouts lately – 35 minutes of cardio and about 15 minutes of light weights. It’s the perfect way to start my day.

Erica- I agree! I think its a confusing field and the more accessible you
are as a professional, the easier it is to become noticed.
Ohh body attack- there is a gold’s near my new place!

8.5 months preggers- shoot girl- you rock anything right now!! :)

I totally agree in that any workout with a number of days involved is not the best concept. Exercising should be a part of life, not just 60 days of life! I’ve been having great runs this week during some gorgeous, cool mornings :)

I’ve been taking advantage of the cool air system passing over Chicago and walking to and from work with my iPod on. I love it!

I have been loving this weight workout I got off of a blog. I normally don’t like doing weights on my own cause I feel like I don’t push myself. This workout is different. I feel the burn!
    Have a great Friday!
