Thriving in 30

by bhealthy on July 18, 2011

I’m a huge fan of whole foods that are not processed, local, and organic if possible. I do not take vitamins and minerals because I feel we obtain the nutrients we need from the foods that we eat (or should eat!) in general. In the case of performance (or circumstances such as pregnancy, disease, etc.) though, I think supplements can be helpful and have their place in the nutrition world! Vega has sent me samples in the past of many of their products. So far I have been sent samples, loved, and reviewed:

To be honest, before every race I have run in the past few years- I have used the Vega Sport (Performance) Optimizer before/during training and race day to help my performance. You can check out my OBX Marathon recap and find the reviews as well. If there is one supplement I would endorse, it would be that! I noticed a considerable difference in stamina, energy, performance and recovery whenever I drank a Vega Sport Performance Optimizer before any run and that was amazing to me!

Vega contacted me recently about blogging as part of their “Thrive in 30″ campaign and I decided to join. This means I will watch a series of 12 video lessons over the course of 30 days, with vegan Ironman triathlete, Vega formulator and best-selling author, Brendan Brazier. Brendan will reveal tools to harness plant-based whole foods toward total body health, provide tips as well as action steps, that can extend on to Being Healthier readers too. Oh … AND… the Vega Blogger that has the MOST comments throughout this 30 days in regards to their Thrive in 30 posts will receive a gift basket of Vega products! I would love to send one of you that gift basket because I feel like we should always pay it forward. So keep checking for my Thrive in 30 posts!

Small changes make a big difference and I am a huge proponent of that idea. I was pulled in by the “Thrive in 30″  explanation and one phrase in particular, “even a small change like adding a clean, green smoothie with plant-based protein to your diet, can help you achieve real benefit.” On that note, I decided to throw down a Whole Food Health Optimizer smoothie for breakfast today.

I mixed it with 1 cup of unsweetened, vanilla almond milk and it was absolutely fantastic! I’d love to have time in the morning to make a veggie omelet but I just don’t. Nothing can replace fresh fruit and vegetables but Vega products come in as a close second in my opinion.  I will report on how I felt tomorrow along with a fun Tuesday post! My friend started their very own garden ( 25 ft x 25 ft ) in Pittsburgh, PA and I will be sharing a post with you all about their harvest! I am attempting to become a “garden pimp” by forcing my recipe ideas upon them.
Would you let me be your garden pimp?
I wish I had the square footage to grow my own vegetables. I do, however, have amazing recipe ideas all the time!
How do you feel about plant-based nutrition products?
Do you or would you grow your own vegetables?
Tell me all about your garden/ideal garden !

I agree! I try to get everything I need through food, but sometimes supplementing is necessary (i.e. during pregnancy I am taking a prenatal vitamin and iron because I became anemic real quick!). The Whole Food optimizer sounds great- I will be on the lookout for it. We do have a garden! RIght now our tomatoes, cantaloupe, watermelon & jalapenos are thriving!

This year my garden is in pots.  I have peppers, tomatoes, and sage.  Next year I would love to try the real deal in the ground :)  Have a great day!

Great post! I am a firm believer on getting nutrients from the foods we eat. I have never tried Vega products before. I’ll have to keep my eye out. :)

I’ve never tried plant based nutrition products, I would prefer to eat the plants (veges etc) rather than something derived using a mechanical process. I am sure there is nothing wrong but its just my thinking…I read that drinking coffee before exercising helps so I tried it and it does help, however I don’t follow this either. Its plant based though:)

this is interesting! I’m from a similar school of thought as you in that i think we get most vitamins and minerals from our diets and don’t need supplements (except I do take calcium). I like to stick with whole foods too, so I haven’t tried plant based nutrition products. I would love to grow my own veggies if I ever have some sort of yard :)
