About this Blog
Welcome to “Being Healthier”
My name is Laural and I am 29. I started this blog as a creative outlet, fascinated by the information I learned everyday. I hold a Master of Science in Human Nutrition and a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience. I may or may not seek credentials as a Registered Dietitian since I plan to pursue a PhD in the near future. Connecting with others that have the same passion is what life is all about, in this case, that passion is healthful eating, cooking and living.
I am currently a Nutrition Associate in lovely North Carolina. I have been working in community nutrition education for almost 2 years. Prior to graduate school, I was a behavior modification instructor and a gym director. I recently became an Adjunct Professor so I am looking forward to teaching this Fall at Meredith College. I also write infrequently as the Raleigh Couples Cooking Examiner!
“Being healthier” is a concept I found so interesting, because it is something we can say we want but is not necessarily measurable. What “healthy” means to you could be entirely opposite of what healthy means for another person. Do you want to lose weight to be healthier, Is being healthier eating more superfoods, Do you want to be more physically active, maybe you want to gain weight to be healthier ?
Being healthier for me is all about balance. I strongly feel to live a healthy lifestyle, I have to nourish all aspects of my life not just my stomach! I post about foods that I eat and meals that I make but also post entries about what I do to stay healthier in every aspect of life. You may see older posts with three sections: Body, Mind, Soul. I rarely post in that format now though I still follow the concepts. Whether my body needs rest, a run, yoga or some strength training, I do something for it each day. In the mind section, you will find anything such as class information, work related news or nutrition articles. For the soul section, many things fulfill my spirit but it is often yoga, meditation, or friends. Never underestimate the power of friendship.
Be it carrots or carrot cake, hugs and laughter, yoga or aerobics, wine or water, nourishing yourself in the most appropriate way is crucial to staying healthy for life. I try to never attach“good” and “bad” in terms of food. Every food has something to offer as foods are composed of many nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Some foods may offer more nutrients and some might be not so healthy but might be what we need. I hope to share healthier foods, information on vitamins and minerals, and share my journey. I appreciate your comments and questions. If you’d like to send me an e-mail, feel free to contact me at: bhealthier@gmail.com.
