All You Need to Know About Stelara

Psoriasis is a skin ailment that is characterized by red patches of swollen and dry skin. These red patches of skin are often itchy. It can occur due to various genetic and environmental factors. Stelara is a systemic form of treatment given to reduce and control this disease. Stelara is a prescription medicine.

The chemical drug that Stelara uses to treat psoriasis is called Ustekinumab. It was first manufactured in the Netherlands. This drug is majorly used to treat psoriatic arthritis and sometimes is used to treat Crohn’s disease.

Stelara acts on the immune system of the body and prevents it from producing certain enzymes. This way, it controls the inflammation that psoriasis causes. However, it can lead to severe side effects if taken in improper dosages.

Some of the major side effects of the drug include-

  • It can cause tuberculosis and bacteria-induced infections.
  • Some patients suffer from coughs and shortness of breath.
  • In some cases, the patients suffer from excessive weight loss fatigue.
  • Psoriasis arthritis patients can suffer from joint pain and nausea.

Stelara is usually not prescribed unless all other forms of treatment fail to control the condition. Even then, doctors check various aspects of health before prescribing this form of medicine. Patients with the following are usually advised against using Stelara-

  • People with severe allergies, cancer or Reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome
  • People allergic to latex
  • People who have recently received or are going to receive immunization vaccine
  • Pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers

Doctors prescribe this medicine in dosages of 45mg to 90mg. The first dosage is given in the 0th week, followed by a second dose in the 4th week. After that, a follow-up dosage is given once every 12 weeks. It is injected into the body using a syringe. Doctors can adjust and tweak the dosage and frequency with which the medicine is given after analyzing the patient’s response to the said treatment.
