Smoking is very harmful to the smoker’s health as well as for non-smokers and for the environment also. Effect on the environment is a major reason to stop smoking. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 480,000 deaths occur in the United States annually because of cigarette smoking and among them, 41,000 deaths occur due to second-hand smoke. Smoking causes various health problems like cancer, lung disease, heart disease, stroke, infertility as well as other damaging effects to teeth and skin. Smokers increase the risk of these health problems on their own, but non-smokers also suffer from various health issues because of second-hand smoke. Second-hand smoke frequently affects children and infants who are exposed to it. Children and infants exposed to second-hand smoke are at a higher risk of sudden infant death syndrome and also suffer from asthma and ear infection.

Both cigarette smoke and waste from the cigarette harmful for the human health and environment because they pollute air, land, and water. Second-hand smoke is very dangerous, it contains almost 4000 chemicals like toxic metals, carcinogens and many poisonous gases like carbon dioxide, methane, and others they affect the atmosphere very badly. When these chemicals are breathed out and released they mix with air and pollutes the air. Similarly, cigarette butts also pollute the soil and water and also litter public places. Otherwise, the accidental consumption of cigarette butt is very harmful to children and animals. Generally, discarded cigarette butts end up in water bodies and afterward fishes and other water animals eat them which causes death to them. It is very difficult to quit smoking once a person becomes addicted to it. But through self-help materials, counseling and pharmacotherapy one can very easily quit smoking. There are many nicotine rehab centers available state wise to help people to quit smoking by providing smoking counseling strategies. Among them, American Lung Society, American Cancer Society, American Legacy Foundation Truth Campaign are very popular organizations. Counseling programs can be provided by a trained psychologist, counselors or clinicians and cognitive behavioral methods are the major support of most counseling programs. Along with counseling, pharmacologic therapies are also important, there are both prescription and over the counter medicines helps smokers to quit smoking. We all know how dangerously smoking harms us, therefore it is very important to save the human being and environment from the harmful cigarette smoke and butt.
