Mild to moderate psoriasis can be treated using topical treatment where medication in the form of creams and ointment is applied on to the skin. In case of severe psoriasis, a combination of topical and oral medication along with light therapy is effective. Topical psoriasis treatment includes:

  • UVB Phototherapy: The skin is exposed to an artificial light source which produces a controlled amount of UVB rays. UVB rays are effective in treating mild to moderate psoriasis. Side effects like redness, sore skin persist but they are short termed.
  • Goeckerman therapy: Goeckerman therapy is the combination of coal and UVB treatment. Goeckerman therapy is more effective as coal tar increases the reception of UVB rays.

Oral or injected medication

Oral treatments or injections are taken when the psoriasis is severe or when other treatments fail. They used only for a brief period because of severe side effects. They are as follows:

  • Retinoids: Form of vitamin A, the retinoid is used in treating severe psoriasis. Lip inflammation and hair loss are some of the side effects.
  • Methotrexate: Taken orally, methotrexate reduces the production of skin cells thus reduce the inflammation. They have side effects hence are not good for longer usage

Although the treatment depends upon the severity of psoriasis, it always better to start the medication in the mildest way.
