People suffering from migraines tend to resort to everything that they can lay their hands on. This includes chiropractor practice, acupuncture etc. Indeed in for a large number of migraine patients who have visited a chiropractor, migraines have improved a lot. Though doctors tend to brush aside the benefits of chiropractor care for migraines, it indeed has been found to be beneficial in a majority of sufferers. A small study has been conducted to assess the efficacy of chiropractor vis-a-vis medicines.
The result was found to be quite appreciable. Almost in 90% of cases, there was found to be a reduction in migraine episodes. What is more, the participants who were treated with medicines for the same number of days returned with similar migraine episode frequencies. This does exemplify the fact that with proper care from an efficient chiropractor, migraines can take a backseat. However, doctors are unable to ascribe any reason to it.
The Effect of Spinal Manipulation on Migraine Headache
It is widely believed by doctors that migraines are caused by throbbing blood vessels. However, until now there has been no effective cure for this condition. Doctors advise a range of measures such as diet, lifestyle changes, exercise, good sleep etc. to reduce the episodes of migraines. However, people who have not benefitted much from these remedies, have flocked to chiropractor migraine clinics. Chiropractors make spinal manipulations to stretch and adjust the various bones, ligaments and connective tissues. A good chiropractor may be able to bring about changes that help in reducing the episodes of a migraine.
However, this needs to be complemented by physical therapy, exercise, diet, and good sleep. In fact, it has been exhibited in 21 different studies that patients who receive chiropractic care at least once a week for two months can experience a reduction in migraine intensity, frequency, and duration. Overall, they can experience an improvement in their quality of life. However, immediately after the session, you may feel tired, experience a slight headache, some soreness in the spine and a bit of stiffness. This will get better slowly.
A Word of Caution
Chiropractor manipulations may interfere with some migraine medications. Moreover, if you have numbness, nerve damage, loss of strength in extremities or osteoporosis, it is better to refrain from going to the chiropractor clinic.
