- Avoid consuming food that may cause diarrhea, gas and bloating to get worse. These may include caffeine, alcohol, carbonated drinks, milk products, fatty foods, foods high in sugar, gas-producing foods like cabbage, broccoli, beans and foods containing the artificial sweeteners sorbitol and xylitol.
- To reduce constipation add foods that are rich in fiber to your diet, drink plenty of water and also ensure that you exercise regularly.
- Maintain an account of what you eat and whether you have any symptoms after eating.
- Never skip meals and make sure that you eat your meals slowly.
- Make sure that you do not completely stop eating from one food group before consulting your dietician as you need to make sure that your body gets all the nutrients that you need.
- Limiting your coffee and tea intake to 3 cups per day will help control IBS.
- Limit alcohol consumption and taking too many fizzy drinks.
- It might help to limit the amount of high-fiber foods that you intake especially if you have a lot of gas and bloating. This especially includes whole grain bread, pasta, rice, and cereal. Instead of eating soluble fiber such as oats might help.
- Limit your intake of fresh fruit to 3 portions a day.
