Different Ways to Treat Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation in the region of the plantar fascia that can cause a sharp pain especially at the bottom of the foot, near the heel. Although commonly considered a problem that athletes and runners experience, plantar fasciitis may also occur in non-runners for a variety of reasons. Here are some of the common methods adopted in the treatment of plantar fasciitis.
Physicians recommend the administration of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that can be bought quite easily at any drug store. These medications that are normally ibuprofen based help to alleviate the pain, thus making it possible to gently stretch and exercise the foot.
When there is significant swelling, you could use an ice pack around the affected region of the foot. This will help to reduce the inflammation.

Some traditional systems like Ayurveda, also recommend gentle oil application and massage followed by soaking the foot in hot water to which rock salt has been added.

Gentle stretching exercises that work not only on the heels and ankles but also on the calves are recommended. Some people also resort to the practice of specific asanas that involve the gentle stretching of the feet.

In recent times, orthotics experts are of the opinion that the gradual strengthening of the flexor digitorum brevis muscle is a very important component in the treatment of plantar fascia.

Another common recommendation from the medical profession is to use footwear that has arched insoles with cushioned support, especially on the pressure points. Walking without supportive footwear could aggravate pain, especially in people who have fallen arches.

Keeping the foot taped in a splint so that it remains in a semi-stretched position especially when sleeping could also help to reduce the stiffness and pain felt when standing or walking in the morning. Some people also recommended simple exercises where you run the soles of your feet over a golf ball or a glass bottle. This, however, needs to be done under supervision, to ensure that you do not aggravate the condition by improper exercise.
