Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition which is accompanied by red patches, silvery scales, itchiness, and pain. Plaque psoriasis is the most common type of psoriasis and about 2-3% of the US population is affected by the same. It can occur on any part of the body, including inside of the mouth or the genital region. Plaque psoriasis medicine available in the market helps reduce the symptoms. Complete cure for the disease is not yet available.
Why does it occur?
The real cause of plaque psoriasis has not been discovered yet. It is considered to be an autoimmune disease. The immune system of the body mistakenly attacks the cells as if fighting an infection. This causes the cells to multiply and the cells get accumulated on the surface of the skin. Hereditary and environmental factors also play a big role in the occurrence of plaque psoriasis. Around 10% of people carry the genes of plaque psoriasis, and of this 3% are affected by the disease. In others, an injury, high level of stress, bad sunburn or an infection can trigger the immune system, which in turn can be the cause of plaque psoriasis.
